Architect Gary Chang Redesigns His 330 Sq. Ft. Apartment Into A Classy Transformer

In Hong Kong, apartments are small and expensive due to the space limitiations. Gary Chang, an architect, decided to redesign his old home, a 330 sq. ft. apartment into a classy transformer apartment to be able to change into 24 different designs, all by just sliding panels and walls. He calls this the “Domestic Transformer”. Watch the video after the jump.

It sounds great and looks great – on video that is. Notice that Gary had to pull his wall partitions really slowly in order to prevent things from falling down. His kitchen is so small that most likely he can only cook simple meals. If Gary wanted to have anything more than an instant noodle then he would have to eat out.

Having the soak bath in the fittings would mean that Gary has to ensure the dryness of the tub before stowing it away. Mold formation might be a problem but could be solved with a good ventilation system. I’ll give him credit for using the silk screen to block out the light source when needed, even when he doesn’t want to watch any TV.

Overall Gary Chang’s concept does wonders for small and tight spaces. Imagine having a small studio of your own but with all the facilities or a full sized home. Now if only he would do away with the CD wall rack. I bet he could do some great things with that out of the way.
