The basic requirements you need to be a top rated Malaysian food blogger explained here at ahyen.com

I’ve been churning out food reviews on my own since my new domain ahyen.com was registered. Along the journey I’ve referenced many food bloggers like vkeong, cklam, iamthewitch, Big Boys Oven just to name a few (there’s actually a long list at Zhongg Internet Digest) and many others to see why are they so successful and found these 4 basic requirements that they have which I don’t.

1 – A Decent Camera

A good food blog is never complete without good pictures. Having an illustration of the food you are reviewing helps the readers imagine better. It also gives the reader an initial expectation of how the food will look like when served. Take koay chiap for example. For those who don’t know what it is would not know how it looks like but thanks to a nicely taken photograph, your readers would know what to expect. A well-framed shot will also make the food surprisingly delicious than expected.

2 – The Lust For Good Food

Yes this is a requirement. You might be surprised that there are some Malaysians who are not picky about food and will just take the same dish 3 times a day, 7 times a week and… well you get the idea. The curiosity to search for good food is like that itch you need to scratch so desperately. You must have this trait to be a top rated Malaysian food blogger else you will find yourself eating the same food over and over again which means one thing. NO NEW FOOD POSTS.

3 – A Pen Which Is Mightier Than Any Sword

Your medium here is your blog so you must be able to convey how the food smell, feel and taste like in writing. The capability of making your readers drool just by reading your articles would ensure they feel exactly how you felt that day when you were having that pot of bak kut teh or that packet of nasi lemak. Sure, a picture paints a thousand words but still the pen being mightier than the sword is your best bet in conveying your thoughts to your readers.

4 – The Willingness To Share

All that information is useless if you are not willing to share your findings with others. Be it through word of mouth or through your blog, sharing is always a way to show that you care. Letting others know that you have something that they might be interested is what makes us human. Sharing about good food, now that makes you a saint ;)

So do you have what it takes? As for me, I know I do not have all of them so I might not be able to make it as a top rated Malaysian food blogger anytime soon. What about you? If you think I’ve left out some do let me know!

One of the lost art of the culinary world is to make original springy fishcake without using any additives. Ah Koong's Eating House on Jalan Changkat Thambi Dollah, Kuala Lumpur serves just that. Coordinates - 3° 8'24.11"N, 101°42'46.26"E

It is a know fact that the fishcakes or fish balls which we consume almost on a daily basis consists of additives to make them ‘bounce’ better. In fact the skill of making genuine fishcake or fish balls is considered a lost art to the culinary world. Right next to Shaw Parade in Jalan Changkat Thambi Dollah, Kuala Lumpur, there is a shop which according to them still maintains the traditional way of making fishcake without additives – Ah Koong’s Eating House.

If you have a GPS you can key in the following coordinates to locate the shop – 3° 8’24.11″ N, 101°42’46.26″ E. Once at the shop you will be greeted with a variety of choices ranging from yong tau fu, prawns and even fresh oysters! One of the items which is a must-have items in Ah Koong’s Eating House is their famous fishcake.

This fishcake is deemed to be the king of fishcakes and reputed to have no preservatives or additives. Mixed with your choice of noodles, this fishcake will definitely make your meal worthwhile.

Aside from their fishcake, Ah Koong’s Eating House is actually more well known for their original fish ball noodles. They also serve curry laksa, porridge and steamboat as well! Ah Koong’s Eating House also has a branch over in Taman Sentosa, Singapore. Heck, they are doing so well they even have a website !

When I was there I ordered the curry laksa and picked out some yong tau fu and the oh-so-famous Ah Koong fishcake. The curry laksa was spicy enough and had a lot of ground lemongrass in it making the soup very fragrant and aromatic.

The yong tau fu was fresh and very springy. The fishcake was also fried to perfection with the outer skin crisp to the bite but not over done. Surprisingly the springiness of the fishcake was still intact after all that frying.

If you never had REAL fishcake before, this spot is worth a try. Maybe you can ask them how the made the fishcake so good. My guess is probably the chef who made it took some lessons from this video.

Another famous spot for food in Puchong, Malaysia is the Puchong Yong Tau Fu Restaurant with fresh made-on-the-spot yong tau fu. Coordinates - 2°59'43.44"N 101°37'25.95"E

A stone’s throw away from the infamous Puchong Utama Yip Chuen Dry Bak Kut Teh lies a kampung house which is fully extended into its compound. During the day this house is closed tight but at night it lights up and explodes with activity, with people coming from as far as Setapak and TTDI to have a taste of their handmade yong tau fu. What makes their yong tau fu so special? Read on to find out!

The shop is situated right opposite SK Puchong Batu 14. If you have a GPS you could key in these coordinates – 2°59’43.44″N 101°37’25.95″E. The shop is not hard to find but parking is indeed a problem. The people who flock here would have filled up the sides of the road so if you do plan to come here make sure you do it by 7pm.

On arrival make yourself home and head for the kitchen as this is where you will need to choose your yong tau fu. Don’t be surprised to see all the yong tau fu without its fillings! You are supposed to pick out the ones you want and they will fill it up for you on the spot! Yes that’s right! Your yong tau fu is made on the spot so freshness is guaranteed! Now that’s the reason people keep coming back.

While waiting for your yong tau fu to be filled, you can always grab some paper-wrapped chicken a.k.a. ji bao gai which in fact tastes quite good surprisingly! The chicken is marinated in fermented bean sauce, wrapped in wax paper and baked. I’m not sure why the paper-wrapped chicken tasted so good so I’ll leave the CSI work to you guys. But as far as I know the default version is deep-fried and not baked. Hmmm…

Another item which I believe is the second secret to this Puchong Yong Tau Fu’s success is it’s chili sauce. There is just something about it that keeps you wanting more. The mix of chili sauce and sweet sauce really compliments the yong tau fu. Heck even having rice and the chili sauce alone is already heavenly! Trust me, one plate is never enough :)

Alas the wait is over! Our yong tau fu is served and boy does it look delicious! All the pieces of yong tau fu are filled to the brim with fish paste! The soup is filled with the taste of vegetables and fish paste, making it just wonderful! Just having the soup with rice and the chili sauce makes you even hungrier and we haven’t even touched the yong tau fu yet!

Take a look at the yong tau fu up close. Where else can you find yong tau fu pieces so big and so full with fish paste? Even if you could, can you guarantee the freshness? The freshness of the ingredients paired with the savory soup makes the meal just perfect! Oh did I mention that yong tau fu is also one of the healthier food choices? Nothing is fried and there’s no red meat so say goodbye to your cholesterol woes! But if you love the fried fu chuk, then I’ve got nothing to say :p

If I had 10 thumbs I would definitely give 10 thumbs-ups to Puchong Yong Tau Fu as it is a living example of simplicity at its best. You don’t need fancy garnishing or nice ambiance to be sucessfull in the food industry. All you need is real good food. Plus the price is not exorbitant. Where else can you find yong tau fu at the price of 50 sen a piece? Its only available at Puchong Batu 14 Yong Tau Fu!
