The Best Job In The World – Part 1

by jianchung on June 21st, 2008 | Posted in inspireMe™ | Tags: , ,

Have you ever wondered what is the BEST JOB ever?

Or at least thought of who is the BEST EMPLOYER in terms of benefits, pay or even opportunities?

NO the BEST JOB ever is NOT applying sunblock to Gisele Bundchen’s buttocks (okay, ALMOST but let’s be realistic here). Let’s take a step back and analyze the situation. What is essentially a JOB?

You complete a task given to you and you are given a reward for it. That is called a JOB.

The more times you repeat the task, you get better at it. That is called SPECIALIZATION.

SPECIALISTS or EXPERTS get paid better and with more experience under their belt their monetary value increases. In any job, you are required to learn a certain skill set and when you become an expert at that skill YOU GET PAID MORE.

Now if you are required to be an expert at something you would agree with me if I said that everyone would choose to be an expert at something they love. So why aren’t all of us doing so? WHY NOT BE AN EXPERT AT SOMETHING YOU LOVE DOING?

Yeah! That’s right! finally the answer we have sought for! Let’s just work in the field that we really like! YEAH RIGHT!! You wish! Don’t forget you have to STILL BE WORKING FOR SOMEONE. You’ll be doing the things you like but you’ll still have to report to someone else. You’ll be lucky enough to have a boss thats forgiving but what if you get one that limits your freedom?

So why not BE AN EXPERT AT BEING YOUR OWN BOSS? That way you get to do what you love and you don’t have to report to anyone. You get to set your own goals and your own rules. That is the true meaning of FREEDOM.

Makes sense? I hope it does. But how do you be an expert at being your own boss? More enlightenment coming your way.

Stay tuned!

A Tribute To Hancock

by jianchung on June 10th, 2008 | Posted in Blog | Tags:

I’m doing this for the phone.

If any of you are members of the All Malaysian Bloggers Project (AMBP) you should know by now of the ‘Hancock: A Different Kind of Superhero’ Contest.

I WANT THAT SONY ERICSSON W660i!!!

Let’s see what I have to do.

1) Answer the following two (2) questions on your blog.
i) Who plays the eponymous character in the movie Hancock?
ii) Fill in the blanks: In a bid to save a _______, Hancock heaves it out to sea, only to see it smash a sailboat. (Watch the trailer, for the answer)

Answers:
1-i) Who plays the eponymous character in the movie Hancock? WILL SMITH a.k.a Willard Christopher Smith, Jr.
1-ii) In a bid to save a gray whale, Hancock heaves it out to sea, only to see it smash a sailboat.

I hope I’m the chosen one! :D

Here’s a small tribute to Hancock: A Different Kind of Superhero.

Are You Working Late Or Sitting Late?

by jianchung on June 6th, 2008 | Posted in inspireMe™ | Tags: , ,

Just a random post from some old emails.

This is how an office should look like after 5.30pm

this is how an office should look like after 5.30pm

Narayana Murthy’s views on staying late in the office.

It’s half past 8 in the officebut the lights are still on…PCs still running, coffee machines still buzzing…and who’s at work? Most of them??? Take a closer look…All or most specimens are 20-something male species of the human race…Look closer… again all or most of them are bachelors…and why are they sitting late? Working hard? No way!!! Any guesses??? Let’s ask one of them…Here’s what he says… “What’s there 2 do after going home… here we get to surf, AC, phone, food, coffee.. that’s is why I am working late…importantly no bossssssss!!!!!!!!!!! This is the scene in most research centres and software companies and other off-shore offices. Bachelors “time-passing” during late hours in the office just bcoz they say they’ve nothing else to do…Now what r the consequences… read on…”Working”(for the record only) late hours soon becomes part of the institute or company culture. With bosses more than eager to provide support to those “working” late in the form of taxi vouchers, food vouchers and of course good feedback,(oh,he’s a hard worker… goes home only to change..!!). They aren’t helping things too… To hell with bosses who don’t understand the difference between “sitting” late and “working” late!!! Very soon, the boss start expecting all employees to put in extra workinghours. So, My dear Bachelors let me tell you, life changes when u get married andstart having a family… office is no longer a priority, family is… and that’s when the problem starts… becoz u start having commitments at hometoo. For your boss, the earlier “hardworking” guy suddenly seems to become a “early leaver” even if u leave an hour after regulartime… after doing thesame amount of work.People leaving on time after doing their tasks for the day are labeled as work-shirkers… Girls who thankfully always (its changing nowadays… though) leave on time are labeled as “not up to it”. All the while, the bachelors pat their own backs and carry on “working” not realizing that they r spoiling the work culture at their own place and never realize that they would have to regret at one point of time.

So what’s the moral of the story?? Very clear, LEAVE ON TIME!!! Never put in extra time “unless really needed”. Don’t stay back unnecessarily and spoil your company work culture which will in turn cause
inconvenience to you and your colleagues. There are hundred other things to do in the evening..Learn music…Learn a foreign language…try a sport… TT, cricket………and for heaven’s sake net cafe rates have dropped to an all-time low (plus, no fire-walls) and try cooking for a change. Take a tip from the Smirnoff ad: “Life’s calling, where are you??”

Please pass on this message to all those colleagues and please do it before leaving time, don’t stay back till midnight to forward this!!!

I hope that due to the fuel price hike many would NOT resort to this lifestyle. I personally have tried it myself and it is not productive at all and the worst part is it corrodes your life slowly. You will find yourself losing touch of your own life, your physical health will begin to deteriorate and you will start to criticize and complain about every single thing you come in contact with.

Try to leave work where it belongs. Never take it back home with you especially for those very decisive personalities. If you do your life WILL suck. Trust me. Been there done that. Go exercise more often, sweat it out. Eat healthy and talk to others more.

You have only ONE life. DON’T WASTE IT!

For A Better Malaysia

by jianchung on June 5th, 2008 | Posted in Blog | Tags:

I know every single Malaysian out there is pumped up right now due to the recent fuel price hike to RM2.70.

Bear in mind that later it will hit RM4 or more. Next to go is the utilities and food prices. Things are just going to get from bad to worse. There is seriously nothing we can do about it now so let us adapt to the change. Hard times call for hard decisions.

3 Good Reasons To Remove Excise Tax On Malaysian Vehicles

by jianchung on June 4th, 2008 | Posted in Blog | Tags:

A dated reader’s comment on The Star caught my attention in tune with the impending fuel hike in Malaysia.

Don’t subsidise fuel, don’t tax cars

I AGREE with Dzof Azmi’s argument in Fueling Trouble with Petrol Subsidies, (Contradictheory, StarMag, March 30) that the Government cannot afford to subsidise petrol and keep prices artificially low forever.

However, I want to point out that when you talk about the price of petrol, you have to also talk about the price of cars in Malaysia. These two items go hand in hand, something that Dzof failed to mention.

If one expects the rakyat to pay the real price of petrol (say, RM3 per litre) in the future when the petrol subsidy is zero, then the price of cars must also be real, ie, be tax free.

If one expects the people to pay the full, real-world price of petrol – and I must say it is a perfectly reasonable expectation – then the rakyat expects, also reasonably, to buy cars at real-world prices, without the exorbitant taxes currently imposed.
